With anime, we are all too familiar with the tried and worn out high school romance tropes. Fleeting feelings of a first love to those after school moments of love. Yet, as we get older or maybe never even had that interaction, we as working adults deserve better offerings from our anime. So, with that in mind I have taken the time to catch up with some titles that take known concepts and shift them forward and position them towards a more adult specific age range. Titles, like the formerly discussed Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague, offer us older viewers with a show that can be more genuine. Its ability to relate back to us as a more mature audience can go further beyond what a traditional anime rom-com or slice of life can offer. So, here are a few more anime that might help to satisfy that craving for an anime that knows how to offer a refreshing take on a younger trope!

The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again!

This anime was such a hidden treat for me. While I have seen it garner a more aware status for anime and its manga counterpart, this show is still insanely entertaining. The show follows a working woman as she goes about her day to day, tackling office life while returning back home to a rather peculiar cat. For her cat can walk on two paws, cook, clean and other wise take care of her! Having been saved as a starving kitten one winter by our female lead, this cat would return her kindness by in turn, taking care of her!

This show is one of the more laid back of the three recommendations here. Having a story that follows Fukuzawa as she navigates the complex working environment of Japan, while being a rather lazy homebody who’d rather return late from drinking than going home to take care of herself. Which is why her cat is always taking care of her! Making sure she’s fed, clothed and disciplined when needed by threatening to stop cooking for her! The nerve! Being an anime that has zero twists and turns, you can be safe in knowing what you see is what you get here and that’s what makes it enjoyable on our end too. Then again… maybe that Cat has some… godly background to explain their abilities? You’ll just have to watch the show and figure that out!

Shirobako Gives An In-depth Look Into The Workings Of Animation And Adult Work Life.

As an adult that can appreciate the deep complexities behind Frieren’s after effects of the heroes journey, I often wonder how the background in creating such a masterpiece plays out. Especially when it’s being adapted into a two season anime! Well, Shirobako seeks to deliver that peek behind the curtain. To attempt to dispel some mystery’s behind how a series gets pitched or how Voice work plays out in conjunction with the storyboard process. What this show offers viewers beyond the slice of life genre is such an in-depth look behind an industry that many of us admire oh so much.

Which is exactly why I love getting the opportunity to recommend this gem of an anime to a whole new generation of viewers when I get that opportunity to do so! As one of the shows that I first reviews back when it released on Crunchyroll all those years ago, I can still say that it’s remind a personal favorite. Now with a movie to enjoy that expands on the series amazing cast of characters, there’s no reason not to give this series a look! Especially if you are like me and happen to sorely love industry anime, but with a focus on college graduates attempting to juggle or make it in the workforce after years of study and learning.

New Game Takes Game Development to Another Level!

Where Shirobako took us behind the curtain on how an anime gets made, New Game! pulls us into the world of an aspiring game designer and how a company goes about making and pushing a game to market. New Game! does this with cute visuals, dashes of fan-service, but with the same level of tact in showing us the process of making a game. What I find charming about this anime is just how relatable many of the characters tropes and interests can be. Especially from a viewpoint of a gamer who often finds themselves thinking deeply about the innermost workings of game development.

As mentioned this title does push the fan-service elements more than others. It can feel out of place in many moments. There’s a character that you find often sleeps in office, a common occurrence in working Japan, however she’s often found in her undies, so viewers be warned! Aside from the service aspect, the shows lead Aoba is a delightful source of relation and understandable motivations.

These are just but a few of the recommendations that we have for Anime that tend to focus in on the working adult! Granted, these are but a pin-drop in an otherwise endless sea of options that have debuted both recently and in the past. All the anime outside of Shirobako can be enjoyed on Crunchyroll, with the former being available on Hidive!
