We all have those fond memories of recess with friends or of those family game nights that were corner stones of the school week. Some of us, may have never really gotten to have those experiences while others had them in spades. However it’s in the magic of games, be they digital ones or physical ones, that seems to pull together people in a way that’s fun, social and supportive. Magic The Gathering is one such game. Officially released in August of 1993, Magic The Gathering has seen close to 50 million players embrace the tabletop card game that has both inspired creators and has caused a boom of interest in Local Game Shops (LGS for short). Where the Magic, in Magic The Gathering comes from is partly due to the popularity of its commander decks and how they can bring together a pod of 4 in a game that sees you battering or betraying to see your way to victory.

While I wish I could say that I have been invested in the community, I grew up always curious. It wasn’t until our wedding day when my best man decided to introduce us to the wonderful joy of Magic The Gathering. That first Tolarian Community College video was enough to dissuade past worried about the game being something that was too complex or difficult to get into. Which now and days there are a plethora of unique and awesome content out there to start your Magic The Gathering Adventure with! From the Magic The Gathering website itself to Tolarian Community College. The options now and days couldn’t be easier to access and are better suited towards helping individuals with social anxiety, like myself, with access to learning materials that don’t require me going to in-person events.
That’s again, the beauty of this community. Apps like Magic The Gathering Arena gives you access to much of the mechanical know-how, while keeping it easy to digest, while fan-made plugins to popular software like Tabletop Simulator offer other courses of access. It’s amazing to have such variety of communities that can offer players be they shy or boisterous, options of getting to experience Magic The Gathering on their own terms. With more and more LGS’s offering game nights that cater to a more relaxed setting or priding themselves on being able to provide a safe setting overall, most of them have Magic The Gathering at their core.
If you’ve been on the fence about hoping into this great TCG then now is the perfect time to hop on in! With the ongoing Final Fantasy collab and a brand new, sci-fi focused, Edge of Eternities set coming August 1st, it’s a great time to be a fan of Magic!
