In wake of recent news both of North America’s largest anime streaming services have announced a special partnership that is beneficial for all fans of anime and for long time subscribers to both Funimation and Crunchyroll. Starting yesterday both services announced a special agreement wherein both parties will start sharing select licensed anime for streaming on both respective services! This means that series on Funimation like Cowboy Bebop, Psycho-Pass & D. Gray Men will be view-able for subscribers over on Crunchyroll. Likewise titles such as Free!, Mob-Psycho 100 & The Testament of Sister New Devil to name only a few, will be stream-able to Funimation subscribers! This is great news for users, like myself, who happen to have both a Funimation & Crunchyroll subscription plan. Now will this eliminate the need to have either service provider? Hardly. They will have their specific series to which they will keep on their services respectively.
Now being able to watch these select titles it will encourage the viewer to possibly explore grabbing a subscription to the opposite service in question! This is a great asset to grow the subscription base for either company. However it isn’t without question as to what effect this will have on the streaming and licensing market as the two biggest entities will basically hold almost all the rights in a monopoly. While this may not be bad for current streaming platforms it does present a certain question as to how the licensing market will look pretty soon as we can expect to see interesting deals going on with this upcoming fall and winter season!
