With Father’s Day soon upon us (By Soon I mean in like several weeks), I wanted to take a moment to look at what we consider the top four dad’s in anime to be! Now we do not rubric them on a list of needed traits and desires but rather how cool they would be to have as a father. Heck, they don’t even have to be a father to qualify for this list! So without further waiting, let’s dive straight into this list!
- Joseph Joestar: While not a direct blood father to Jotaro, Joseph Joestar is the father figure that is well… eccentric. Having had a run with the ladies and having fathered, Josuke (From Diamond is Unbreakable), he has had his fair share of travel and adventure. He is way over his head in situations and has a fascination with the words, “Oh my god!” or “Oh no!”. Having helped to finally vanquish(?) th mortal enemy of the Joestar’s, Dio Brando, Joseph now lives life in the care of free time alongside his good buddy, Speedwagon. He may be old but he can still kick butt when the need comes.
- Van Hohenheim: While a character in the shadow of Ed and Alphonse Elric’s lives, he was there in the looming shadows none-the-less. While he has little interaction throughout the anime he does have a heart when the moments of family reunion allow. Still haunted that he was not their to care for his wife and kids, Hohenheim does everything in his power to fight for what he believes is the right course of action for everyone. Even if it brings him to his lifes end, he pushes onward no matter the loss.
- Maes Hughes: Arguably one of the best known dad’s in anime, Maes Hughes struck us with his profound joy and love towards his work ethic, family and friends. He made us laugh and he sure as hell made us all fall to the floor in the fetal position to ball our eyes out. He was a character that was the bodiment of the ideal father and a character that while annoying, was a truly caring individual who holds a gold medal for best father of the year forever award.
- Kamina: This man is pretty much the heart and soul for the entire series of Gurren Lagann. He is the driving force that reminds you to always believe in the Kamina that believes in you. His death was tragic and while not as emotionally tragic as Maes’s death, it still was an impacting force that pushed the story further. He is cool, he is out there and he is the driving force behind all those inspirational speeches we give our friends.
While a short list I did want to post something in honor of the awesome father’s and father-like-figures out there for the upcoming father’s day! Do you all have any other picks? Feel free to comment on them down below!
