You ever have one of those moments where you are so immensely infuriated with how good something just played out yet you are so thrilled by it that you cannot help but say bravo and bow, handing them the trophy for best played move. I mean seriously, having not watched episode five and six until just now, it was something to behold. These two episodes had me in such a tizzy of anguish, excitement and literally had me jaw-dropped, all while watching this master piece unfold. The storytelling in this anime alone is just leagues above most others. If you have seen the anime or at least read the manga, you would have an inkling of what I mean. It is gritty. While it is fanciful in many ways, it is but a small sliver of a larger, more delicious cake. The storytelling is impacting, it makes you feel for the characters and you suffer almost as much as they do from within the limits of the story.
These past few episodes have left me with a delightful sense of jubilation, happiness and well, anger. Not an anger directed at the anime in any way, an anger directed at how amazingly crafted this episode was and how it threw you for a loop you did not know was coming or one that you did partially suspect. It is what good storytelling does for you and then what more it can do. It can make you feel angry, happy or even surprised. Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi is just so brilliant and so perfect. It is why this Manga has won awards, it is why it is getting both an anime and live-action adaptation. It’s a story that hits hard to home, it is a thriller that fills your life with suspense. Maybe I just haven’t watched too many thrillers? Maybe it is just Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi? Either way the latest two episodes from this anime have been immensely thrilling. If you read our previous articles covering the anime, you would understand how blown away I was by just the first two episodes. Now, with episodes 5 & 6, the formula has changed and the anime went from a 10, all the way up to 111. I cannot express of clarify more than I already have, I would just be reiterating myself up to this point but I have to say, you need to watch this show.
It plays out like a typical thriller yes but it does so with such a visual flair, tone and music. This anime is, dare I say it, flawless in it’s approach to adapt the story from the manga to the universe of anime adaptations. While I cannot personally speak for the manga, I can speak for what I have seen from the anime so far. This type of excellent work is rarely seen in most anime. There is a lack of sloppiness in the art style and the voice acting is so gosh darn superb and polished that every episode just leaves me wanting more. It leaves me rolling around in anguish at how frustrated I get, knowing that this anime gets the better of me with each and every passing episode.
In my opinion that is a STRONG win for an anime title that would be anime of the year. If not the century. Heck, the universe. In all reality, the folks behind this anime adaptation are really devoted fans to the manga and are giving this the cream of the crop attention and care. The characters develop at such a beautiful pace that I feel genuinely attached to these characters that when something tragic happens to them, I almost want to lung at my T.V. while screaming no. While I wonder how the last 6 episodes will play out, I do hope that these last few episodes do not become items of a rushed frenzied but rather a slow and thoughtful process that can deliver us the ending we all desperately crave or the ending that will leave us sad but clapping. When the curtain does eventually fall, I can say that this will be an anime worth watch again and again.
